The SIAI S.22 was a racing flying boat made by the Italian aircraft manufacturer SIAI-Marchetti . It was built as a successor to the unsuccessful SIAI S.17 and SIAI S.21 models to win the Schneider Trophy , but the machine crashed on July 28, 1921 in front of Lake Maggiore , killing the pilot.

history

The previous models SIAI S.17 , SIAI S.19 and SIAI S.21 were supposed to win the Schneider Trophy according to SIAI's plans , but these flying boats were unsuccessful: The S.17 crashed into Lake Maggiore , while S.19 succeeded not to install the engine safely. The S.21 could not start due to a keel damage in Monaco. SIAI decided on a new twin-engine concept. SIAI was looking for maximum aerodynamics and reinforced the aircraft with wire ropes and metal bracing, but the aircraft could not withstand the loads and crashed, killing the pilot. SIAI had announced a construction made of light metal for 1922, but this project was abandoned.

technology

Deviating from the previous models, the S.22 was a double-decker flying boat with a canoe-shaped wooden hull, but with two motors that were attached to the center of the upper wing, as in the previous models. The S.22 had a single-seat, open cockpit with a windshield. As with the predecessor machines SIAI S.8 to SIAI S.21 , the wings were covered with ropes and attached to the fuselage with spars and steel wires. For the planned participation in the Schneider Trophy, the S.22 was equipped with two Isotta Fraschini V.6 engines with 300 hp each and two four-blade propellers, one working as a pulling engine and the other as a pressure engine. The engine mount was made from steel spars.
