The SIAI S.19 was a racing flying boat made by the Italian aircraft manufacturer SIAI-Marchetti .

history

According to SIAI's plans, the previous model SIAI S.17 was supposed to win the Schneider Trophy , but was unsuccessful and crashed into Lake Maggiore . With the S.19, a new, more stable machine was developed that was based on the conception of the S.17.

Like the previous models, the S.19 was a double-decker flying boat with a canoe-shaped wooden hull. As with the predecessor machines SIAI S.8 to SIAI S.17 , the wings were covered with ropes and attached to the fuselage with spars and steel wires. Since the engine of the S.17 was too weak, the larger Ansaldo 4E29 V12 with 550 hp and a two-bladed propeller was installed for the S.19. Instead of the previous engine mounting with wooden spars, steel spars were used. However, it was not possible to safely install the engine until the Schneider Trophy 1920, so that the S.19 could not take part in the race.
