The Savoia-Marchetti SM.86 was a single-seat Italian dive bomber that was planned as the successor to the well-known SM.85 . The project was discontinued after the completion of the prototype due to the outbreak of the Second World War .
history
The SM.86 was developed as part of a program for a twin-engined battle and dive fighter aircraft. With the SM.86, Savoia-Marchetti improved the mistakes that were made in the development of the SM.85. This included the cockpit, the fuselage, the tail unit, the flaps and the engines. The prototype was completed on September 22, 1937 and immediately tested. A total of 40 test flights were carried out. The Regia Aeronautica ordered more test aircraft, but this order was canceled because of the outbreak of World War II. The prototype of the SM.86 was transferred to the 96 ° Gr. Aut at Comiso airport, which was equipped with Ju 87B , and completed several enemy flights, including the attack on the airfield of Al-Far (Malta) and the offensive near Ioannina (Greece). Despite its flawless service, the SM.86 was retired on August 17, 1941 and replaced by a Ju 87 B. The Regia Aeronautica ordered 97 machines, but due to time constraints these were rewritten to the existing SM.85, which was later replaced by the Ju 87B.
construction
The machine differed only slightly from the SM.85, but experimented with new water-cooled 12-cylinder in-line engines. They were looking for an advantage over the SM.85, which was still flying with the Piaggio P.VII C.35 radial engines. However, the machine achieved the best performance with the Walter Sagitta ICSR, each with 600 HP motors. All other engines were too heavy or had too little power.
