The SIAI (Savoia) S.12 was a flying boat , which was planned as a reconnaissance and light bomber and was manufactured in 1919 by Societa Idrovolanti Alta Italia in one copy. The machine emerged from the experience with the S.8 and S.9 , but did not get beyond the prototype stage because the Italian Navy showed no interest in procurement. SIAI then tried to popularize the machine by participating in racing events.
history
SIAI developed the S 12. On November 13, 1918, SIAI commissioned chief designer Raffaele Conflenti to develop the S.12 with the help of experience from the First World War . Conflenti oriented itself on the page 9 and also chose the Fiat 12bis with 300 hp as a drive, which had already proven itself in the pages 8 and 9. The fuselage should be made of wood and the wings should be covered with fabric. The prototype had its maiden flight in 1919 . The Italian Navy was not interested in any other type of flying boat, nor did talks with the Royal Navy come to an end.
To support the marketing, they took part in races. The S.12bis won the Schneider Trophy competition in Venice on September 20, 1920 with an average speed of 170 km / h. On January 7, 1921, it reached a top speed of 222 km / h on flights on Lake Maggiore . From 1921 the Italian Navy used the S.12 as a demonstration aircraft.
construction
Like the S.8 and S.9 before it, the S.12 had an open cockpit and a double-decker design. The original 3-man military version was converted into a 2-man variant for use as a racing aircraft. The tail unit was constructed in the classic cross shape. The drive of the racing version was an Ansaldo San Giorgio engine 4E-28 with 480 HP with a four-blade wooden propeller.
