The SIAI S.17 was a racing flying boat made by the Italian aircraft manufacturer SIAI-Marchetti , with which SIAI wanted to win the Schneider Trophy . The Schneider Trophy was intended as an advertising measure to boost the flying boat business.

history

The SIAI seaplanes, like the SIAI S.9 , had great success in air races. It was therefore decided to set up a special series to consolidate these successes. It was more about performance than practicality. SIAI experimented with different engines and used the machine in several races.

According to plans by SIAI, the aircraft was supposed to win the Schneider Trophy , but was not successful; the plane crashed over Lake Maggiore . A new construction was used for the successor model SIAI S.19 .

technology

Like the previous models, the S.17 was a double-decker flying boat with a boat-shaped wooden hull. As with the predecessor machines SIAI S.8 to SIAI S.12 , the wings were covered with fabric. An Ansaldo San Giorgio 4E-14 with 310 HP with a two-bladed propeller, which worked as a pressure drive and was located directly on the underside of the upper wing, provided the drive. However, this version crashed.
