The SIAI S.8 was a single-engine multi-purpose flying boat from the Italian manufacturer SIAI-Savoia , which was produced for the Italian Navy (then Regia Marina ) from 1917 .

history

The SIAI S.8 was designed by Raffaele Conflenti as a single-engine double-decker flying boat and was used for over ten years, primarily as a reconnaissance aircraft, but also as a submarine hunter. The successor machine SIAI S.9 was only manufactured after the end of the war.

construction

The boat-shaped hull was made of wood, as were the equally large, fabric-covered wings of the two-handled biplane. In the two-seat cockpit, the commander and copilot or observer sat next to each other, with the second man also operating the 7.7 mm machine-gun.

The drive consisted of an Isotta Fraschini V.4 with 160 hp. It was a liquid-cooled 6-cylinder in-line engine. Due to delivery problems, a Colombo F-150 with 120 hp was occasionally installed. Later aircraft used the more powerful 220 hp (164 kW) Hispano-Suiza-44, which was also used in the SPAD XII. The S.8 had free-falling bombs for anti-submarine defense.

172 pieces of the S.8 were produced for the Italian naval aviators, which were used until the end of the First World War and beyond.
