The SIAI S.16 is a passenger flying boat for five people developed by SIAI-Marchetti in 1919 . The machine was crowned the most successful flying boat of the decade. In addition to several civilian versions, SIAI also developed a military version of the S.16 and sold it all over the world, where some of them are still preserved today.
history
The SIAI S.16 was a single-engine flying boat powered by a CD-Lorraine-Dietrich-12Db engine with 400 hp, which has also been used successfully in other aircraft. The fuselage was made of 30 mm thick plywood, the rest of the aircraft was made of 4 mm thick wood. The wings were covered with fabric, with the leading edge of the wings being reinforced. This construction turned out to be very solid. The machine was mass-produced and exported all over the world.
As early as 1920 technical innovations made improvements to the S.16 possible, which from then on was to be called S.16bis. A new engine from Fiat called Fiat 12bis with 300 hp had less power, but received a new larger propeller to compensate for this. On the S.16bis, the fuel tank and the hull stability have been improved.
The military version of the S.16 was called S.16bis M. This had a modified fuselage to accommodate a machine gun in the bow, and two pylons to attach bombs to the wings. The military version was to Spain, Brazil, Italy and the Soviet Union sold. Spain produced the S.16bis M under license and equipped it with a Hispano-Suiza engine with 300 hp. A further development of the S.16bis M was the S.23, which was used for training on seaplanes.
The machines sold to the Soviet Union were designated as S-1bis, used mainly in the Black Sea area until 1931 and relocated to Siberia and Latvia after 1931. Some of the machines were converted to S-1ter in the OMOS factory in 1927/1928 and some of them received a Lorraine-Dietrich engine with 450 hp.
