The Savoia-Marchetti S.66 flying boat was essentially an enlarged development of the Savoia-Marchetti S.55 , which had three separately mounted engines and a higher payload. The S.66 was built for commercial use and the prototype first flew in 1932.

history

The S.66 was designed by Savoia-Marchetti as a pure passenger aircraft. The machine was made entirely of wood. The S.66 consisted of two fuselages that were connected to one another via the wing and the tail unit. The two hulls were also passenger cabins, each equipped with 7 seats, later the number of seats was reduced to 4 seats for the sake of comfort and the cabin made more luxurious. The first flight took place in 1931, at that time still operated with three water-cooled twelve-cylinder V-engines Fiat A.22R with 500 HP each. These had too little power and the lifting movement was unnecessarily longer, whereupon the engines were exchanged for water-cooled twelve-cylinder V-engines CD Fiat A 24R with 750 hp each. This version was then used on naval routes by the Italian airlines Aero Espresso Italiana, Societa Idrovolanti Alta Italia, Navigazione Aerea and Società Aerea Mediterranea. The S.66 was converted for military use in 1940 at the request of the Regia Aeronautica . The aircraft was in service from 1931 to 1943.

technology

The aircraft was made entirely of wood, which was reinforced with metal fittings in stressed areas. The hulls were glued in the passenger cabin below the waterline with a waterproof, impregnated linen fabric to ensure the hull's tightness. The S.66 was a seaplane high-decker with a double fuselage tail. The tail unit, like the two fuselages, was connected to one another. The three CD Fiat A 24R with 750 hp each were mounted on wooden spars above the two fuselages on the wing. The cockpit was installed below the engines on the wings. The Savoia-Marchetti S.66 had a double tail which was connected to each other. A passenger cabin with windows was built into each fuselage, each holding up to 7 seats.
