The SIAI S.50 was an Italian fighter aircraft that flew for the first time after the end of the First World War . Originally known as MVT , the machine was added to the SIAI sequence as S.50 in 1922 after its designer Marchetti was employed at SIAI.

history

Alessandro Marchetti designed the MVT in 1917 at the Vickers Terni works in La Spezia . On December 9, 1919, the MVT reached a speed of 250 km / h with the pilot Elia Liut, which was an, if short-lived, unofficial international record. At the same time, a rate of climb of 11 minutes at 5000 m was determined.

In 1920, the MVT was equipped with wings with a larger span, modified struts between the wings and the fuselage, and a modified horizontal stabilizer. With a new 275 hp SPA 62a engine, 275 km / h could be achieved on flights over the Montecelio military test site. After Marchetti switched to SIAI as chief designer in 1922, the name of the MVT was changed to page 50 and the machine was planned for the official fighter aircraft competition in 1923. The Regia Aeronautica received three copies for testing; However, the factory did not receive the hoped-for order to build 12 machines.

A S.50 was equipped with swimmers for participation in the Schneider Trophy. The successor to the S.50 was the SIAI S.52

construction

The all-metal construction was powered by a 220 hp SPA 6a water-cooled motor and was armed with two synchronized Vickers machine guns. The rear part of the fuselage, which was "suspended" between the two very thin wings, was so flattened that a profile-like shape emerged from the side. The steering around the longitudinal axis was carried out using the technique of wing twisting .
