The SIAI-Marchetti S.205 is a four-seat single-engine aircraft produced by the Italian manufacturer SIAI-Marchetti .
History and construction
The S.205 was created in 1964 on the basis of an idea by SIAI-Marchetti chief designer Alexander Brena . The aircraft was an all-metal low wing, powered by a Lycoming -360-A1B6D piston engine with 200 hp and offered space for four people. The further development, the S.208, was powered by a 260 hp engine, had retractable landing gear and five seats. The first aircraft to be produced, a S. 205-18F, flew in February 1966 and shipments began the following year. Production was interrupted in 1975, but resumed in 1977 to produce another 140 S. 205-20R for the Aero Club Italia by 1980 .
Approximately 65 fuselages were shipped to the United States for final assembly by the Waco Aircraft Company in Syracuse , NY . Initially the aircraft was called the WACO Sirrus (four-seater) and later the VELA S220 (five-seater). After the death of Mr. Berger, President of WACO, assembly in the USA was discontinued.
Mission history
The Italian Air Force acquired 45 aircraft and used them as liaison , training aircraft and as a glider tug . The military variant was called S.208M. It differed from the civilian version by the avionics , two cockpit doors and a tow hook, as well as the lack of some fuel tanks. The first 4 aircraft delivered were S.205 and were later converted to S.208M.
Two aircraft were delivered to Tunisia and used there as training aircraft.
