The Savoia Marchetti SM.90 was a passenger aircraft made by the Italian manufacturer Savoia-Marchetti in the 1940s. It represented a further development of the SM.75 and was similar in its design to the Junkers Ju 52 . During the conception, value was placed on the possibility of a quick conversion to a military variant. However, the prototype of the SM.90 created in 1941 was not followed by series production.

history

The SM.90 was a stretched variant of the SM.75 and intended for civil aviation; However, the designer Alessandro Marchetti made sure that the aircraft could be quickly converted to a military variant. In the SM.90, all mistakes that were made with the SM.75 were to be avoided and the payload and cruising speed increased. The prototype was built and tested at Chions Taiedo Airport . Designed as a low-wing aircraft with three engines, however, the SM.90 fell short of expectations, and the lack of armor in particular ultimately made the difference. The drive was taken over by three Alfa Romeo 135 RC 32 engines with 1400 hp each, these were necessary due to the higher take-off weight of the SM.90. The Alfa Romeo 135 was an air-cooled double radial engine with 18 cylinders.

Test phase

After a test phase in 1941, the aircraft was abandoned in favor of new developments due to technical problems. The aircraft was brought to Germany in 1943 and was probably dismantled there. After 1945, Caproni and Savoia Marchetti joined forces and wanted to revive the SM.90 project for the civil sector, but this did not succeed. Strong sales by the US Air Force of Douglas DC-3 oversaturated the aircraft market, so that no market was found for the civilian SM.90.
