The SIAI S.52 was a single-engine fighter aircraft produced by the Italian manufacturer SIAI . After the Italian Air Force Regia Aeronautica rejected the SIAI S.50 because it was 94 kg overweight as a fighter, a tender for a single-engine fighter was sent to all Italian aircraft manufacturers. The companies SIAI, Fiat , Breda , Piaggio and CMASA participated in the tender for the project.

history

With the SIAI S.50, the SIAI company had almost fulfilled the requirements of the Regia Aeronautica, only narrowly missing the target with an overweight of 94 kg. Alessandro Marchetti, the new chief developer at SIAI, wanted to continue working with the concept S.50 and improved the version with a Hispano-Suiza -42 engine (rated output of 300 hp) and called it SIAI S.52. The machine had improved wings, ailerons and a modified tail unit. Two prototypes 3MM and 4MM were built for the tests and made their first flight in January 1924. The top speed of the S.52 was 275 km / h. The machine was only barely defeated by the Fiat CR.1 , which had better flight characteristics and a better Fiat A 20 engine with 410 hp. The Fiat CR.1 could accelerate up to 285 km / h. The attempt to sell the machine abroad was slow; the only sale went to Paraguay. The prototypes of the S.52 were moved to the flight school in 1932 and destroyed in a crash that same year.

technology

The fuselage of the plane was due to the stability of light metal and very aerodynamically shaped the wing spars were also made of light metal. The wings were covered with fabric and also had a very aerodynamic shape, adapted to the aircraft. The engine of the machine was a Hispano-Suiza-42 with a nominal power of 300 HP; a two-bladed propeller with a spinner (propeller cap) provided the propulsion.
