The Savoia-Marchetti SM84 was a medium-weight three-engine Italian bomber from 1940.

History and construction

Radial engine Piaggio-P.XI

The SM.84 was to be the successor to the Savoia-Marchetti SM.79 . The origin was in 1935, when the twin-engine transport aircraft Savoia-Marchetti S.74 was created as a prototype. However, it lost the tender against the Fiat G.18 .

The SM.84 received an extendable weapon turret in the lower front fuselage, as well as a weapon turret on the fuselage behind the cockpit. Up to 1,600 kg bombs or two torpedoes could be loaded in the fuselage. The machine had three Piaggio P.XI RC40 engines with 1,000 hp each.

The aircraft did not meet expectations, however, as it was not particularly maneuverable and the bombs and torpedoes could only be dropped with imprecision. The engines were unreliable. So the SM.79 remained in use. Despite this, series production of the SM.84 began in 1941.

variants

  • SM.84ter with more powerful 1,500 PS Piaggio P.XII engines
  • SM.89 twin-engined combat bomber variant of the SM.84 from 1941 with 1,500 hp Piaggio P.XII-RC.35 engines

Mission history

The SM.84 was used together with the CANT Z.1007bis , Fiat BR.20 and SM.79. The first unit to use SM.84 machines was the 41 ° Gruppo Bombardamento Terrestre. On September 27, 1941, a torpedo from an SM.84 severely damaged the battleship HMS Nelson . From 1943 the SM.84 was withdrawn from the front line.

Six SM.84 and SM.84bis were delivered to the Slovak Air Force in 1942. A total of 246 machines were produced.
