Rabocerus gabrieli (one also finds the notation Rabdocerus gabrieli ) is a beetle from the family of salpingidae (Salpingidae) and the subfamily of Salpinginae. The species name gabrieli is an honor of Major General Joseph Gabriel-Neisse , whofrequently exchanged viewson coleopterology with Julius Gerhardt, who first described it . The longhorn beetle species larch buck ( Tetropium gabrieli ) was also namedafter Joseph Gabriel-Neisse.

features

The beetles are 3 to 4 millimeters long. The surface is shiny and has a bronze tone, it is roughly dotted, the legs of the legs are black. The points are arranged in rows on the elytres (wing covers). The head is the same width as the pronotum , there is a furrow on the sides of the base of the pronotum. The antennae are eleven-limbed in all false weevils , in Rabocerus gabrieli the outer six limbs are larger and darker than the inner ones.

There are four other species of beetles in the subfamily Salpinginae. Rabocerus gabrieli differs from the similarly large Rabocerus foveolatus ( Ljungh , 1823), among other things, in that in R. foveolatus only the five outer antennae are enlarged.

False weevils are predatory, for example they feed on bark beetles . Larvae of Rabocerus gabrieli were found in Sweden in the feeding tunnels of the French alder bark beetle ( Dryocoetes alni ).

distribution

The distribution of the beetles extends to northern and central Europe, but only sporadically and rarely there.

The larvae develop under the bark of recently dead deciduous trees such as gray alder , black alder , birch , beech and oak .
