Rachel Papo

Rachel Papo (* 1970 Columbus, Ohio ) is an Israeli art photographer and photo journalist .

Life

Papo grew up in Israel and took an interest in photography as a teenager. After graduating from an art high school in Haifa , she did her two years of military service with the Israeli Air Force , where she was used as a photographer. From 1991 to 1996 she studied art at Ohio State University , graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts , and then working as a photojournalist. From 2002 to 2005 she studied at the School of Visual Arts , where she graduated as a Master of Fine Arts . She then worked as a freelance photographer, including for the New York Times and Maariv .

She became internationally known in 2008 with the photo series Serial No. 3817131 . There she shows the everyday life of Israeli soldiers in cool pictures . The title is your own personal identification number as a person doing military service. The series was published in the USA, Germany, Israel, Spain, France, Brazil, Estonia, China, as well as in Turkey and Switzerland, including in National Geographic . In 2009 she received the International Photography Award for the series in the Deeper Perspective Photographer of the Year category .

Papo lives in Brooklyn.
