Rachs Restaurant School is a reality documentary on RTL , the first season of which was broadcast in 2010. Christian Rach , who became known through the show Rach, the restaurant tester, is responsible for the project . The cook is also one of the four trainers for the show's candidates.

The series is based on the British model Jamie's Kitchen with Jamie Oliver .

content

Twelve candidates between the ages of 17 and 44, whose professional résumés contain various breaks, for example due to unwanted pregnancy or imprisonment, are given the opportunity to set up a restaurant within two months. After successful participation, they can either work in service or in the kitchen on a long-term basis or receive appropriate training.

During the two-month development phase, the candidates receive € 500 per month as well as an apartment. The “Slowman” restaurant is located on the ground floor of the famous Chilehaus in Hamburg . The name was chosen on the one hand because of the deliberate differentiation from fast food ("Slow"), on the other hand, the Chilehaus was owned by the Sloman family until the mid-1980s .

Three candidates left the project prematurely for various reasons (unreliability, too young an age, reorientation). At the end of the program, all of the remaining nine interns were taken on in further employment ( permanent positions , vocational training and internships ) based on their performance . As part of the reunion broadcast at the beginning of January 2011, it was announced that three other participants had not used their chance. The main reasons for this were the lack of reliability of the project participants. Irrespective of this, six of the original twelve participants in the program were still working in the Hamburg restaurant at the time and some of them have been given additional contracts.

On September 12, 2011, Christian Rach reported on the TV show Hart but fair that only one participant was now working in the Slowman, two participants had become pregnant, one participant had come into massive conflict with the law.

Roter Jäger on Jägerstrasse in Berlin-Mitte

The second season of the series, which was produced in Berlin, was broadcast between April 16 and May 21, 2012. The location was the “Roter Jäger” restaurant on Jägerstrasse in Berlin-Mitte . The name is made up of the red color of the building and the street name. The restaurant was closed at the end of 2013.

criticism

The press initially received the format well and spoke of the seriousness of the show in comparison to other RTL productions as "a merit of the distant and demanding top chef" and of the fact that entertainment and message were combined in this series.

At the beginning of the second season, the Focus described the attitude towards the participants as a mock do-gooder to sell advertising blocks. Also sueddeutsche.de saw in the trailer of the second season “a lot of casting show à la RTL, but little of 'school television without malice'”. The WAZ attested the format “drama, drama and even more drama” and criticized the stereotyped thinking, but at the same time put it the role of Rach emerged as positive and believable.
