Radiicephalus elongatus is a bony fish from the order of the gloss Fishy (Lampriformes). It lives mesopelagic in the eastern Atlantic from the Azores and Morocco to South Africa .

features

The fish have an elongated body that is strongly compressed at the sides. The height of the body decreases more and more from the head to the elongated tail stalk. The jaws are toothless, the upper jaw can be extended very far. The dorsal fin begins above the eyes and is very long. The first of the 150 to 160 fin rays are elongated. The tiny anal fin sits just in front of the caudal peduncle and has six to seven fin rays, the pectoral fins nine to ten. The caudal fin is divided into two parts and consists of a tiny fin on the caudal peduncle, supported by four to five rays, and a filament formed by six to seven soft rays that can reach body length, but is usually damaged and broken off in captured specimens. Adult fish have no ventral fins , the tiny one of the juvenile fish has nine soft rays. Scales are absent with the exception of a series of pores along the lateral line organ .

Radiicephalus elongatus becomes 60 to 75 centimeters long. The body of the fish is silvery, the base of the dorsal fin is black, and the dorsal, pectoral and caudal fins are red.

Way of life

Since Radiicephalus elongatus is known only from a few specimens caught with nets, its way of life is largely unknown. The fish live meso- or bathy pelagic . They feed on lanternfish (Myctophidae) and possibly krill . The larvae of the egg-laying fish are planktonic . When in danger, Radiicephalus elongatus , like many cephalopods , emits a dark brown, ink-like liquid.
