Radio24syv is a Danish radio station owned by a consortium of Berlingske Media and PeopleGroup . The company is based in Copenhagen . As a public service program, the operation is funded with government grants.

history

The idea to found the station arose in 2010 as a result of political disputes over the award of the Danish frequency chains. The Lars Løkke Rasmussen I government wanted to create an alternative to the public service Danmarks Radio (DR). With the approval of the governing parties Venstre and Conservatives as well as the right-wing populist Dansk Folkeparti and the neoliberal Liberal Alliance , the frequencies of the DR culture channel P2 were advertised.

After other interested parties had jumped off because of editorial guidelines by politics, Berlingske Media and the PeopleGroup were awarded the frequencies and the advertised 93 million Danish kroner from broadcasting fees annually for eight years . On November 1, 2011 Radio24syv started broadcasting. Because of the funds from license fees, the broadcaster has to be tested according to the standards of public service broadcasting in Denmark .

After the first 25 weeks of broadcasting, the Radio24syv project was considered a failure. According to a survey, the majority of the programs reached fewer than 5,000 listeners. In the meantime, the number of listeners has steadily improved, but it is still well below that of P1 , the DR program, which the station was supposed to compete with the will of the political initiators around culture minister Per Stig Møller .

In March 2019, Radio24syv announced that it would no longer extend its [obsolete] allocation of the nationwide FM frequency chain, which was formerly used by P2 , and that it would cease broadcasting operations. The reason is that the premise that at least 70 percent of the editorial staff must be located more than 110 kilometers from Copenhagen is not kept. However, the employees refused to move to western Denmark.

Concept and program

The broadcaster went on air with its self-chosen concept of broadcasting only verbal contributions around the clock (“24sieben”) - that is, to forego music for entertainment purposes. The stipulation, however, was and is, among other things, to broadcast no less than 20 hours of cultural programs and 30 hours of news a week. In addition, at least two hours of self-produced messages should be sent daily, hourly around the clock and for at least five minutes.

Personalities

Jørgen Ramskov took over the management, Suzanne Moll took over as the responsible editor-in-chief. The program editor-in-chief was the well-known journalist and documentary filmmaker Mads Brügger alongside Mikael Bertelsen. Patrick Bay Damsted became head of "Digital". Moll terminated her contract at the end of 2012 and Bruges was dismissed with immediate effect. After only a month, however, Bruges was reinstated at the old position.
