Radio Jade is one of 15 non-commercial public radio stations in Lower Saxony . Radio Jade emerged from the pirate station Radio Survival . The studio is located in the city of Wilhelmshaven .

history

On April 22, 1992, the pirate station "Radio Survival" broadcast a short program for the first time. The illegal broadcaster was largely composed of employees from the AEG-Olympia plant in Roffhausen near Wilhelmshaven, which is about to close . Their goal was to maintain jobs in the already structurally weak region.

For one year, Radio Survival broadcast almost every Wednesday for a quarter to a half hour. Sometimes a transmission had to be broken off prematurely because Telekom was busy chasing the radio makers.

When the Lower Saxony State Broadcasting Act (LRG) came into force on November 9, 1993, the pirate broadcaster officially claimed to operate radio in Wilhelmshaven and Friesland .

On February 2, 1995, the carrier association Radio Jade Lokalrundfunk eV was founded and in the same year Wilhelmshaven / Friesland became one of six areas in Lower Saxony in which non-commercial local radio went on the air.

Radio Jade prevailed over two competitors and received the broadcasting license on September 10, 1996 from the Lower Saxony State Media Authority (NLM). After setting up the necessary infrastructure for broadcast operations and editorial work, the station went on air on August 30, 1997.

The association currently consists of 14 permanent, 25 freelance and 60 voluntary employees. All previously trained volunteers have been able to continue their careers as moderators and editors at radio stations after successfully completing their qualifications.

Since its inception, over 650 interns have got to know the station and have dealt with work in a radio station. Many young people from the region, but also adults, use the station to gain media skills. For this purpose, the station offers seminars in moderation and studio technology .

Up to 2010 Radio Jade was awarded the NLM Radio Prize four times. The fifth award from the NLM followed in December 2011.

From 1996 until the beginning of 2013 Michael Diers was the managing editor. His successor as editor-in-chief was Katharina Guleikoff. Even after his move as the new managing director of Wilhelmshavener Touristik & Freizeit GmbH, Diers will remain managing director of Radio Jade until 2014. Katharina Guleikoff and Michael Konken follow as managing directors. Karsten Hoeft has been managing director of Radio Jade Rundfunkgesellschaft -gGmbH- since the beginning of 2018.

The chairman of the majority shareholder and former sponsoring association Radio Jade Lokalrundfunk eV, which has around 200 members, is Wolfgang Willig.

financing

Radio Jade is a non-commercial local radio station (NKL), which means that advertising and sponsoring in the program are not permitted. Broadcasting is largely financed from Lower Saxony's broadcasting fees.

From the NLM, Radio Jade receives, like all other citizens' radio stations in Lower Saxony, an annual percentage of 281,300 euros in broadcasting fees. With an annual budget of over 400,000 euros, the broadcaster is forced to generate an additional 120,000 euros through its own contributions and donations. Since the state government has licensed 15 citizen media in Lower Saxony, it expects financial support from the municipalities. The importance and the location factor are named as the reason for the municipal funding. All municipalities in Lower Saxony support their citizens' station, except for Wilhelmshaven and Friesland.

Send volume

The broadcast volume is 109 hours (of which 73 hours in the editorial and 36 hours in the open broadcast area) per week with 365 broadcast days per year. Radio Jade is one of the strongest local broadcasters in Lower Saxony.

Frequencies

Radio Jade can be received via antenna in the Wilhelmshaven / Friesland broadcasting area on VHF 87.8 or via cable on 89.45 MHz (Wilhelmshaven / Friesland) and 94.15 MHz (East Friesland).

Radio Jade has also been available on the Internet as a live stream since mid-2006.
