Rafael Cadenas (born April 8, 1930 in Barquisimeto ) is a Venezuelan poet, essayist and translator.

Cadenas published in 1946 his first volume of poetry Cantos iniciales . After the military coup by Marcos Pérez Jiménez , he went into exile. In 1958 his book Una Isla was written in Trinidad . After his return to Venezuela, his best-known work Los Cuadernos del destierro was published in 1960 .

In the following years, in addition to volumes of poetry, several essayistic writings on literature appeared. In 1985 he was awarded the Premio Nacional de Literatura . In 1992 he received the Premio Pérez Bonalde . In 2007 he was a participant in the IV Festival of Latin American Poetry in Vienna. In 2009 he received the Mexican Juan Rulfo Prize . In 2015 he received the García Lorca Prize for this. The Premio Reina Sofía followed in 2018.
