Sigfrid Rafael Karsten (born August 16, 1879 in Koivulahti , Finland , † February 21, 1956 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish-Swedish sociologist , ethnologist and religious historian . Karsten was a student of Edward Westermarck . He received his doctorate in the same year as his fellow student Gunnar Landtman on The Origin of Worship (1905).

Life

Rafael Karsten went on several field research trips to the Indians of South America. He used the ethnographic material he had collected in a number of books and monographs on religious traditions in South America, in particular from Ecuador , Brazil (on the upper Amazon ), Peru and Bolivia .

Important ethnographic contributions are his works on blood revenge, war and victory celebrations among the Jivaro of eastern Ecuador ( revenge Blood, was, and victory feasts among the Jibaro Indians of eastern Ecuador , 1923) and the civilization of the South American Indians with a focus on their magic und Religion ( The Civilization of the South American Indians: with special reference to magic and religion , 1926).

Karsten also researched the religion of the Skolt seeds from Petschenga ( Petsamo in Finnish ), which at that time belonged to Finland.
