Rafael Obligado

Rafael Obligado (born January 27, 1851 in Buenos Aires , † March 8, 1920 in Mendoza ) was an Argentine writer .

Life

Obligado came from a very wealthy family; he was a son of Luis Obligado y Saavedra and his wife María Jacinta Ortiz Urién. Obligado spent his childhood and youth at the family home near the town of Paraná (Entre Ríos) on the Río Paraná . Hence its honorable nickname el poeta del Paraná .

He began to study law at the Universidad de Buenos Aires , but dropped out after a few semesters due to lack of interest. The foundation of the university's "philosophical faculty" was due to his support.

Although he kept returning to Paraná, he lived most of the time in Buenos Aires . There he married and had two sons, Pedro Miguel and Carlos , who later also became writers. Obligado regularly invited writers to his home in Buenos Aires. These meetings of writers and artists took place for almost thirty years and were in no way inferior to a European salon .

Works (selection)

Obligado was a patriot throughout his life; nevertheless he had his literary debut made in Paris . In 1855 he published his poetry anthology "Poesías" in a very valuable edition. A second edition was published in 1906 much simpler than the first edition, but still well above average.

In “Santos Vega”, Obligado addresses the life and work of a Payador ; a subject that Hilario Ascasubi , Eduardo Gutiérrez and Bartolomé Miter had already dealt with before Obligado .
