Raffaele Vivante

Raffaele Vivante (* 1864 ; †  1965 ) was an Italian hygienist .

Life

Vivante graduated from the University of Padua with a degree in medicine in 1888 . He worked for several years at the Ospedale Civile di Venezia , as well as the civil hospitals in Pavia and Genoa . In 1894 he received the title of medical hygienist at the Technical School of Hygiene of the Directorate of Public Health in Rome .

In 1894 he was hired by the city of Venice as an additional doctor for the hygiene department and then for the bacteriological laboratory. After he had received a professorship for hygiene in Genoa in 1903 , he was appointed health officer of the city of Venice and chief physician of the Office for Hygiene (ufficio d'Igiene) in 1905 and worked there until 1937. For ten years he led the building hygiene course at the University Institute for Architecture in Venice and was a member of the Consiglio Superiore di Sanità from 1924 to 1926 .

For his work during the cholera epidemic of 1911 he was awarded the silver medal for his services to public health and in 1932 he was awarded a prize named after Luigi Pagliani for his work as a health officer. After retiring, he continued to work on public health and environmental hygiene issues.
