The Ragnars saga loðbrókar (German saga of Ragnar Lodbrok ) is an Old Norse saga about the Viking leader and Danish king Ragnar Lodbrok in the 9th century.

Aslaug's childhood and youth are described. This is followed by the battle of Ragnar with a dragon . Ragnar marries Thora Borgarhjort. They have sons Ivar , Björn, Hvitserk and Sigurd. Torah dies. Ragnar marries Aslaug, daughter of Sigurd and Brynhild . This is followed by a description of the sons' deeds. In the end, Ragnar dies in a snake pit at the hands of King Oels of Northumbria .

The saga of Ragnar Lodbrok originated in the 13th century. It ties in with the content of the Völsungen saga and connects its depiction of the legendary Sigurd and Brynhild with historical events of the 9th century.

The Ragnars saga loðbrókar also contains correspondences with information from historical chronicles. With the Gesta Danorum by Saxo Grammaticus there are parallels in the representation of the advertisement for Torah, the marriage with Aslaug and the deeds of the sons. There are also similarities with Adam von Bremen .

Handwriting

The Ragnars saga loðbrókar is handed down in a parchment manuscript from around 1400. It follows on from a text from the Völsunga saga . The manuscript is now in the Danish Royal Library in Copenhagen , Sigel Ny kgl. Saml. (NKS) 1824 b 4 ° folio .
