Raidighi (also Raydighi Abad ; Bengali রায়দিঘী Rāẏdighī ) is a place with about 21,000 inhabitants in the east Indian state of West Bengal .
location
Raidighi is located about 75 km (driving distance) south of Kolkata in the fertile alluvial land between the Hugli and the Sundarbans at a height of only about 5 m above sea level. NN .
Economy and Infrastructure
The place functions as the commercial and service center of a large number of villages, the inhabitants of which live mainly from agriculture (rice, wheat, vegetables, etc.). The place has no rail connection; the nearest railway station ( Railway Station ) is in Jaynagar Mazilpur - from there it is approx. 23 km ( travel distance) by bus or taxi. Since 1995 there is a college on site, a branch of the University of Calcutta .
history
Coin finds from the Gupta period suggest that the region was settled more than 1500 years ago (but probably much earlier). The oldest preserved architectural testimony is the Jatar Deul temple, located about 5 km east of the village , which is mostly dated to the end of the 10th century.
Attractions
Many Kolkata visitors take day trips and boat tours in the Sundarbans; the Jatar Deul Temple is only visited by a few. Another attraction is the Maibibi Temple , which is visited by both Hindus and Muslims . Other mostly modern temples can be found in the surrounding villages.
