history

On April 9, 1895, the following article appeared in the weekly newspaper for the districts of Cloppenburg and Friesoythe (predecessor of the Münsterländische Tageszeitung ):

"Garrel, April 9th. About 40 people gathered last Sunday afternoon at the Widow Cl. Rickwärts Gasthaus in Garrel to discuss the establishment of a Raiffeisische Savings and Loan Fund in our community. After reading out and thoroughly discussing the for all." All those present were of the opinion that such a facility would be of particular use and therefore very desirable for our community, and most of them declared that they wanted to join the savings and loan fund that was to be set up as a member 3 members elected, consisting of Messrs. Pastor Kock, Merchant B. Wendeln and Zeller Th. Wienken, who should carry out the necessary preparatory work and contact a specialist to set up the cash desk. "

Around two and a half years passed before the actual establishment on December 8, 1897. 108 people joined the new association. By "accepting and signing the statutes, the Garreler savings and loan association eGmuH " was formed, whose members immediately met for the first general assembly . Theodor Wienken was elected head of the association.

When the Garrel savings and loan association survived the First and Second World Wars with currency changes and membership losses, the number of members doubled, the balance sheet total rose to over DM 1.1 million and a bank building of its own was built on Hauptstrasse in Garrel (today Jeans- Center-Behrens).

In 1965 the bank changed the company name to Raiffeisenbank Garrel eG . A few years later the bank moved to the office building opposite the parish church.

In 2019, Raiffeisenbank Garrel merged with Volksbank Cloppenburg to form VR-Bank in Südoldenburg eG, based in Garrel.
