Rainer Benecke (born February 8, 1952 in Hamburg ) is a German politician ( Die Linke ).

Rainer Benecke grew up in Hamburg. After graduating from high school, he trained as a bookseller. In his own words, the 1968 movement had a decisive influence on him. In 1972 he became a member of the DKP . In 1988 he resigned from this party and then worked, among other things, in the election campaign for the PDS . He later joined the party Die Linke and was elected one of the two state spokespersons in Hamburg in 2014, although he only received 39.3% of the vote. He was then re-elected in 2016 with 80.2%.

In March 2015, he criticized the way the Hamburg parliamentary group dealt with the top candidate Dora Heyenn , who left the party after being voted out as parliamentary group leader at the end of November 2015 and joined the SPD on January 1, 2018.

When drawing up the state list for the 2017 Bundestag election, Benecke was defeated by 17 votes against De Masi in the first ballot, which received 50 of 98 votes. The other Hamburg party leader, Żaklin Nastić , received 27 votes. The two unsuccessful applicants, however, challenged the result because two delegates who were not entitled to vote had taken part in the election.

In the run-up to the G20 summit in Hamburg 2017 , he presented his criticism of this event and the handling of the protests in detail: "The opponents see the G20 as an illegitimate, unrepresentative, non-transparent, neoliberal and undemocratic association that presumes To regulate global political problems exclusively according to their interests and to leave most of the countries out. ”He criticized the“ general and non-binding declarations of intent ”of this and the previous conferences. He further emphasized: “DIE LINKE was the only party in Hamburg that asked the Senate and the citizenship not to allow this summit to take place in Hamburg - in the middle of a metropolis. It is irresponsible, we said. "

In November 2017 he gave up the office as state spokesman in Hamburg and has since been head of public relations at the DIE LINKE parliamentary group in the Thuringian state parliament . Benecke is also a member of the 19-member advisory board of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation .
