Rainer Borkowsky

Rainer Borkowsky (born October 18, 1942 ) is a former German helmsman in rowing who won an Olympic silver medal in two-man with helmsman in 1956 .

Borkowsky rowed at the Wiesbaden-Biebrich rowing company in 1888 . In 1956 he replaced Achim Wernet as the helmsman in the twos of Horst Arndt and Karl-Heinrich von Groddeck , who had won the German championship in 1955. In 1956 Arndt and Groddeck were able to defend the title with Rainer Borkowsky. The three Wiesbadeners also won the European championship in Bled in 1956 in front of the boats from Switzerland and Austria. At the Olympic Games in 1956 , the three took second place behind the Americans Arthur Ayrault and Conn Findlay with helmsman Armin Seiffert . In 1957, Groddeck, Arndt and Borkowsky defended their German championship title and also won the European Championship in Duisburg. Also in 1957, the three rowers competed in the German championship with a Wiesbaden eight and finished third. After Groddeck moved to Ratzeburg, Arndt and Borkowsky switched to larger boats. With the Wiesbaden four-man with helmsman , they took third place at the German rowing championship in 1958. They also took third place with the Wiesbaden eighth.

For his sporting success he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf on January 21, 1957 .
