Rainer Hönisch

Rainer Hönisch (born January 21, 1959 in Seelow ) is a former German cyclist and junior world champion in cycling .

Athletic career

Hönisch started for SC Dynamo Berlin from an early age after starting cycling with SG Dynamo Seelow. In 1975 he was the winner of the GDR children's and youth spartakiade in the sprint of the youth class B with 11.7 seconds for the last 200 meters, which meant a new GDR record for this age group. He also won the 500 meter time trial in a new record time of 34.1 seconds, which also meant a new record in the men's class. In 1977 he won then the biggest success of his sporting career when he at the UCI World Championships of the juniors in 1000 meter time trial won the gold medal. At the UCI track world championships of the elite, he was third on this time trial course in 1978. In the same year he was also third in the GDR championships behind the winner Lothar Thoms . In the following two years he was second in the national title fights over the 1000-meter distance. He was also on the podium several times in the time trial and in the team pursuit at the GDR championships on the track in the Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle in Berlin (winter track championship) .
