In the following three seasons, Köpnick remained the undisputed number one in the Riesaer Tor with 74 appearances in the 78 Oberliga point games.

When Stahl Riesa had to relegate again in 1981, the 27-year-old Köpnick moved to the GDR league promoted Motor Babelsberg after 89 league games . There he was a regular goalkeeper until 1985, when he was replaced by Klaus Herber, who was five years his junior. He stayed at Motor Babelsberg as a reserve goalkeeper until 1990. Even after the end of competitive sport, Köpnick kept the connection to the successor club SV Babelsberg 03 upright, where he was involved in the club's circle of friends. As a recreational athlete, he still guarded the gate of ESV Lok Seddin in the Brandenburg state class in 1995.
