Rainer Liedtke (medical doctor)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rainer Kurt Liedtke (born September 16, 1943 in Königsberg ; † September 15, 2012 in Grünwald ) was a German doctor, scientist and entrepreneur. His main focus was the theory and practice of biomedical information systems, medical innovations, new therapies for pain , stress and cell degeneration.

Life

Liedtke graduated from the University of Bonn with a degree in human medicine . For his doctorate at the Institute for Physiological Chemistry at the University of Bonn, he dealt with biochemical studies on DNA and RNA and was a scientific assistant at the Institute for Pharmacology at the University of Bonn. His professional activity includes several years as a hospital doctor (including a women's clinic at the University of Bonn) and research, among other things. a. as a project of the German Research Foundation , after which he held leading positions in the pharmaceutical industry (including director of clinical research at Squibb , medical director at E. Lilly ), was also active as a university lecturer for pharmacology (including the Institute for Pharmacology at the University of Regensburg ), also held guest lectures (pharmacology) a. a. at the University of Frankfurt. He was the founder of several companies (including American Pharmed Labs, now renamed EpiCept) and for several years their Chairman & CEO. Liedtke was a member of several scientific societies in the fields of pharmacology, endocrinology, and biological chemistry.

Inventions and medical developments

These include a. biomedical information systems and a number of new therapies: including transdermal hormonal contraception (1988) and its first clinical evidence (with L. Wildt, University of Erlangen); a bioinformatic concept for the topical transdermal therapy of neuromuscular pain using sodium channel blockers (1993/94) as well as its first clinical proof of effectiveness in back pain and postoperative pain (1995), plus the first market product of this kind in the USA (lidopain). A US market product based on the same concept (Lidoderm) is approved for post-therapeutic pain.

Further developments: Transdermal beta blocker patches and their first clinical evidence of effectiveness in hypertension (with W. Vetter, University of Zurich, H. Vetter, University of Bonn, W. Zidek, University of Münster (1987)) and angina pectoris (1988; with J. Bonelli, F. Gazo, University of Vienna, overview and summarized findings in a special volume 'Drug Research' 1989). Insulin transdermal patch , as an alternative to injections; First evidence preclinical (with K. Suwelack, K. Karzel; University of Bonn (1990)) and clinical in type II diabetics (with M. Sorger, H. Vetter; University of Bonn (1990). Antidepressant effects of the neurohormone oxytocin . Prediction of such effects initially from a new bio-cybernetic model (1998/99), then confirmed experimentally (2000; I. Neumann, University of Regensburg, R. Landgraf, Max Planck Institute, M. Ludwig, University of Edinburgh Model of a cellular pathogenetic mechanism of arteriosclerosis (2006 Current developments. "Intelligent" information systems, new general pain theory Clarification of the mechanism of action of NSAID painkillers and their cause for increased heart attacks and strokes.
