Rainer Nagel (born November 23, 1940 in Horb am Neckar ) is a German mathematician specializing in functional analysis .

Life

From 1960 to 1967 Nagel studied mathematics and physics in Tübingen, Cologne, Hamburg and Paris. In 1969 he received his doctorate under Helmut H. Schaefer at the University of Tübingen ( ideal theory in ordered locally convex vector spaces ). From 1969 to 1970 he was an assistant professor at the University of Maryland, College Park . In 1972 he completed his habilitation at the University of Tübingen, where he has been a professor of mathematics since 1975. From 1984 to 1986, Nagel was Vice President of the University of Tübingen, 1989/90 Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics. From 1993 to 1995 he was Professor of Mathematics at the University of Bari (Italy).

Rainer Nagel is married and has three children.

Research and Teaching

Rainer Nagel's main areas of work are

He made contributions to the qualitative theory of positive (strongly continuous) operator semigroups which by HH Schaefer significantly helped develop spectral theory of positive operators in the theory of partial differential equations made available, as well as his contributions to the general theory of strongly continuous operator semigroups .

More than 60 doctoral students have so far emerged from his work in Tübingen.

Rainer Nagel is or was editor of the following journals:

  • Journal of Evolution Equations
  • Semigroup Forum (executive editor) (until December 31, 2009)
  • Positivity (until December 31, 2009)
  • International Journal of Dynamical Systems and Differential Equations
  • Journal of Concrete and Applicable Mathematics
  • Hacettepe Journal of Mathematics and Statistics
  • Algerian Math. Journal

Rainer Nagel has created a number of unconventional courses, including a math and sports seminar. Many of them reflect his affinity for sport.
