Wolfgang Arendt (mathematician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wolfgang Arendt (born March 4, 1950 in Herzberg (Elster) ) is a German mathematician specializing in functional analysis and evolution equations. He teaches and researches at Ulm University .

Life

From 1968 to 1975 Arendt studied mathematics and physics at the Free University of Berlin , the Université Nice Sophia Antipolis and the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen . In 1979 he received his doctorate under Helmut H. Schaefer at the University of Tübingen ( on the spectrum of regular operators ). After a postdoc at the University of California , he completed his habilitation in 1984 at the University of Tübingen ( Generators of positive semigroups and resolvent positive operators ). From 1987 to 1995 he was a professor at the University of Franche-Comté . Since 1995 Arendt has been head of the Institute for Applied Analysis at Ulm University.

Wolfgang Arendt is married and has three children.

Research and Teaching

Wolfgang Arendt deals with functional analytical methods in the theory of partial differential equations , especially with operator half-groups . His most cited works deal with applications of the vector-valued Laplace transformation , lattice theory and harmonic analysis on operator half-groups. One of his best-known results is the Arendt-Batty-Lyubich-Phong (ABLV) theorem .

Arendt supervised more than 25 doctoral projects and wrote over 100 scientific publications. Among other things, he is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Evolution Equations .

Together with colleagues from Tübingen, Karlsruhe and Konstanz, Arendt set up the TULKKA working group. He is also co-founder of the annual international internet seminar on selected topics in the field of evolution equations. In 1999 he received the Merckle Research Award.
