Rainer Rabenstein (* November 1927 ; † April 2, 2018 ) was a German pedagogue and university teacher for elementary school didactics at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg .

Rabenstein was a primary school teacher and school youth counselor in the Neustadt (Aisch) district . At the same time, he studied psychology, education, philosophy and sociology at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and received his doctorate in 1960. From 1960 to 1971 he taught general didactics , didactics in primary schools and didactics in arithmetic at the Nuremberg University of Education . In 1972 he received the chair for elementary school didactics at the educational science faculty of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, which he held until his retirement in 1993.

Rabenstein was significantly involved in the development of the subject of primary school education and primary school didactics. In 1974 he brought the first and to this day only elementary school-specific research facility in Bavaria to the Faculty of Education in Nuremberg, the Institute for Elementary School Research (IfG). The Bavarian primary school curricula since 1970 bear the signature of Rabenstein.

In addition to his structural-programmatic commitment, his merits were above all in his development of solid "teaching aids" for practicing teachers. The methodical models of the “action units” and “presentation units” as well as the volume “Erstunterricht” are “classics” of elementary school didactics.
