Rainer Wimmer (born August 10, 1955 in Hallstatt , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ), trade unionist ( FSG ) and former electrician . He has been federal chairman of the PRO-GE union since November 2009 and chairman of the Social Democratic Union (FSG) group since 2018 . He has been a member of the Austrian National Council since October 2018 and was previously a member of the National Council from 1993 to 2008 and from 2013 to 2017.

education and profession

Rainer Wimmer attended elementary and secondary school from 1961 to 1969 and completed the polytechnic course from 1969 to 1970. He then learned the profession of electrician from 1970 to 1974 and did military service in 1975. Between 1981 and 1982 Wimmer graduated from the Chamber of Labor and Employees’s Social Academy .

Wimmer worked from 1970 to 1983 as an electrician for the Austrian Federal Railways and Austrian Salines AG. From 1984 to 2009 he was chairman of the central works council of Österreichische Salinen AG.

Politician

Rainer Wimmer has been a member of Hallstatt's municipal council since 1985 and was mayor of the municipality from 1988 to 1993. He has also been the local party chairman of the SPÖ Hallstatt since 1984 and was elected district party chairman of the SPÖ Gmunden in 1993 . From 2001 to 2004 Wimmer was deputy chairman of the agricultural, food and enjoyment union (ANG), from 2004 to 2006 he was chairman of the ANG. From 2006 to December 2008 Wimmer was deputy federal chairman of the metal-textile-food union . From December 1, 1993 to October 27, 2008, Rainer Wimmer was a member of the SPÖ and temporarily secretary in the National Council. For the 2013 National Council election, Wimmer ran for 14th place on the SPÖ federal list and was again a member of the National Council from 2013 to November 8, 2017.

Rainer Wimmer has been the federal chairman of the PRO-GE union since November 2009 . In June 2018 he was elected to succeed Wolfgang Katzian as chairman of the parliamentary group of social democratic trade unionists (FSG). In October 2018 he followed Katzian's mandate to the National Council and, when he was sworn in on October 18, 2018, moved into the National Council for the third time as a member.

Private

Rainer Wimmer is married and has three children.
