Wolfgang Katzian (born October 28, 1956 in Stockerau , Lower Austria ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ), trade unionist ( FSG ) and President of the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions (ÖGB) since June 14, 2018 .

Life

After primary and secondary school, Wolfgang Katzian initially attended the commercial academy for one year . From 1971 to 1974 he did an apprenticeship as a banker , from 1970 to 1977 he worked at the foreign exchange department of the Österreichische Länderbank . From 1977 he was youth secretary, from 1986 secretary to the management, from 1992 central secretary for education, advertising and membership service and from 1994 central secretary for organization at the union of private employees (GPA). In 2000 he became federal manager of the GPA. In 1990 he also became deputy secretary and in 1998 secretary of the Group of Socialist Trade Unionists (FSG).

From 2005 Katzian was chairman of the union of the private employees (GPA), through the merger of the same with the printer union from 2006 chairman of the union of the private employees, printing, journalism, paper (GPA-DJP) . Barbara Teiber succeeded him in this position in June 2018 .

From March to October 2006 and from October 2008 to September 2018 he was a member of the National Council for the SPÖ . In the XXVI. In the legislative period (from 2017) in July 2018, Katzian was named as the MP with the highest percentage of absenteeism in votes (73.5%) and referred to as a “phantom” in a comment in the daily Kurier . On September 26, 2018, Wolfgang Katzian resigned his mandate in the National Council in order to be able to concentrate on his function as ÖGB President.

Since 2005 he has been a member of the Presidium and World Board of Union Network International .

At the 2009 ÖGB Federal Congress he was elected chairman of the FSG, and Rainer Wimmer succeeded him in this role in June 2018 . On June 14, 2018, he was elected President of the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions (ÖGB) to succeed Erich Foglar .

Katzian was also president of the soccer club FK Austria Wien until November 5, 2018 .

criticism

At the ÖGB election campaign for the SPÖ before the National Council election in 2019 , Katzian described the entrepreneur Heidi Horten as "sprayed up with her two million chain", which the courier described as one of the low points of the election campaign. The "missing nursery" of Katzian and the misogyny of the statement were criticized. After Horten’s attorney announced a lawsuit against him, Katzian apologized to Horten for his choice of words.
