Erich Foglar (born October 19, 1955 in Vienna ) is a former Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and trade unionist ( FSG ). From 2008 to 2018 he was President of the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions (ÖGB).

Life

Foglar is a trained toolmaker and has been a union member since 1971. From 1979 to 1987 he was a works council member at Philips in Vienna.

From 1987 to 1988 he was secretary of the metal-mining-energy union (GMBE), from 1988 to 1992 deputy central secretary. From 1992 to 2006 he was central secretary of the GMBE (from 2000 trade union metal-textile ) under the chairman Rudolf Nürnberger .

Foglar was the executive secretary of the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions in 2006 and was central secretary of the metal-textile trade union from 2006 to 2008.

On December 1, 2008, he was elected by the ÖGB Board of Directors as the designated successor to Rudolf Hundstorfer as ÖGB President, after he had moved to a ministerial office in the Federal Faymann I government . On June 14, 2018, Wolfgang Katzian succeeded him as President of the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions.
