Rainer from Spalato
Rainer von Spalato (* in the 12th century in Italy ; † August 4, 1180 near Split , Croatia ) is a Roman Catholic saint and martyr .
Rainer von Spalato is the patron saint of the city of Split . He was archbishop there for many years . Before that he was a Camaldolese monk who became Bishop of Cagli in the Marche ( province of Pesaro and Urbino ) in 1154 . He probably died by stoning by Slovenes on a mountain near Split, as he was defending the property rights of the Catholic Church. His name day is celebrated on August 4th.
