Raj Patel (2008)

Raj Patel (born 1972 in London as Rajeev Patel ) is a British-American scientist, writer, journalist and activist.

Life

Patel studied Politics, Philosophy and Economics at the University of Oxford . After graduating in 1995, he studied at the London School of Economics . He received his doctorate from Cornell University in 2002 . From 2006 to 2013 he was visiting professor at the University of California , from 2007 to 2014 research assistant at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban . He is a professor at the University of Texas in Austin and at Rhodes University in South Africa .

He writes regularly for The Guardian as well as numerous other newspapers. His book The Value of Nothing became a New York Times bestseller in 2010 . He has worked for the World Bank and the World Trade Organization , but is very critical of their role in nutrition. His work focuses on globalization , food sovereignty and world hunger .

Currently (2017) Patel is working on the documentary Generation Food on the global food system with Steve James . In 2017 he published the book Seven Cheap Things on ecology and capitalism with Jason W. Moore .

Patel has been an American citizen since 2010.
