Life

Following the adoption of Security Resolution 128 of 1958, Dag appointed Hammarskjöld , Rajeshwar Dayal and Odd Bull as members and Galo Plaza Lasso as chairman of the United Nations Observation Group in Lebanon (UNOGIL).

From September 1960 to May 1961, Rajeshwar Dayal led the United Nations operation in the Congo . Rajeshwar Dayal supported African diplomats in attempts to mediate between Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba and President Joseph Kasavubu . Dayal had the house of Patrice Lumumba guarded by UN troops. The Central Intelligence Agency brought two hitmen to Léopoldville to gain access to Lumumba, while Larry Devlin encouraged the government of Mobutu Sese Seko to assassinate Patrice Lumumba. Dag Hammarskjöld called an extraordinary general assembly and called for Patrice Lumumba to return to his office as prime minister, appealed to the US government to move Joseph Kasavubu to a compromise. The US government did not want to know about it any more than it did about any parliamentary solution, since such a solution would undoubtedly have brought Lumumba back to power.
