Leilek ( Kyrgyz Лейлек) is a district ( Rajon ) in the Batken region in southwest Kyrgyzstan . In the east it borders on the Batken district and in the north, west and south on the province of Sughd in Tajikistan . Its area is 4,653 km² and in 2009 there were 116,861 inhabitants. The capital is Isfana in the west of the district, where there is also a regional airport.

The district of Leilek is located in the northern foothills of the Turkestan chain , which stretches over 340 km through Central Asia , and in the valley between Isfara and Isfana, in which at 394 m above sea level. M. is also the lowest point. In the northwest of the area is an enclave of Tajikistan a few kilometers long. The landscape is generally rather barren, mountainous in the south and a little green in the central plateau.

Demographics

As in the rest of the country, the majority of the 116,861 inhabitants are Muslim ; Due to the proximity to other Islamic countries, religion plays a bigger role than in other districts. In 2009, 66.3% of the population identified themselves as Kyrgyz, 26.9% as Uzbeks and 6.6% as Tajiks. There are always conflicts with the latter in the disputed border area, most recently in June 2018 in a shootout. In another incident in August 2014, border guards from both countries accused themselves of having claimed territories from each other. This resulted in numerous injuries and deaths in the course of the year. With 25 inhabitants per km², the population density is slightly below the national average.

Between 2015 and 2017, the European Union supported the area with 500,000 euros to promote sustainable growth in the region.

In total, the district comprises a city and 46 villages in nine rural parishes (aiyl okmotu) . These are:

  1. Capital Isfana in the west (includes six villages: Al-Bulak, Chimgen, Golbo, Myrza-Patcha, Samat and Taylan)
  2. Ak-Suu aiyl okmotu in the west (includes four villages: main village Ak-Suu, Alga, Jenish and Suu-Bashi)
  3. Beshkent aiyl okmotu in the north (includes five villages: main village Beshkent, 50 Let SSSR, Eski Oochu, Imeni Karla Marksa and Kayragach)
  4. Margun aiyl okmotu in the northeast (includes four villages: main village Margun, Churbek, Darkhum and Dargaz)
  5. Jangy Jer aiyl okmotu in the north (includes four villages: main village Tsentralnoye, Arka, Dostuk and Jashtyk)
  6. Leilek aiyl okmotu to the east (includes five villages: main village Korgon, Ak-Terek, Chuyanchy, Kara-Suu and Leilek)
  7. Katran aiyl okmotu in the east (includes three villages: main village Katran, Jangy-Turmush and Özgörüsh)
  8. Kulundu aiyl okmotu in the northwest (includes five villages: main village Kulundu, Bulak-Bashy, Imeni Lenina, Internatsional'noye and Kommunizm)
  9. Sambula aiyl okmotu in the west (includes four villages: main village Andarak, Iskra, Kök-Tash and Kommuna)
  10. Toguz-Bulak aiyl okmotu in the middle (includes six villages: main village Toguz-Bulak, Aybike (formerly Madaniyat) , Aykol, Gordoy (formerly Imeni Chapaeva) , Kara-Bulak and Min-Jigach (formerly 50 Let Kirgizii) )

Since the south is strongly characterized by the mountains, there are no villages here.
