Rak Panyarachun

Rak Panyarachun ( Thai รักษ์ ปัน ยา ร ชุน ; born June 3, 1914 in Bangkok ; † January 21, 2007 ) was a Thai politician.

Career

Rak was the eighth of twelve children of Phraya Prichanusat (Sern Panyarachun) and Khunying Prichanusat (Pruek Chotikasathien). His father was a senior official in the royal government, rector of Vajiravudh boarding school and later editor of several newspapers. Rak's younger brother, Anand Panyarachun, was Thailand's Prime Minister in 1991 and 1992.

Rak attended Vajiravudh boarding school in Bangkok and received his doctorate in law from Lille University in 1938 . From 1938 to 1942 he worked in the military disciplinary attorney's office. From 1940 to 1945 he was Secretary General of the Civil Air Defense League, then Secretary to the Secretary of Defense. From 1954 to 1957 he was an advisor in the Ministry of Cooperatives and from 1955 to 1957 Deputy Foreign Minister in the government of Plaek Phibunsongkhram .

From 1976 to 1986 he was the first president of the Thai Chess Federation.
