Ralf P. Brandes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ralf Peter Louis Brandes (* 1969 ) is a German physiologist at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main .

Life

Brandes completed his studies in medicine in 1995 ( Hannover Medical School and Emory University in Atlanta ) and received his doctorate in Hannover in 1996 with the thesis Vascular Superoxide Anion Production: In-Vitro Investigations in Lucigenin-Enhanced Chemiluminescence .

After various positions as a postdoc , Brandes completed his habilitation in 2002 in Frankfurt am Main with the thesis Oxygen Radicals - Signaling Molecules in the Vascular Wall . Since 2006 he has been Professor of Physiology in the Faculty of Medicine at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . Here he has headed the Institute for Cardiovascular Physiology since 2008. Together with the Institute for Vascular Signaling under the direction of Ingrid Fleming , the Institute for Cardiovascular Physiology forms the Vascular Research Center in Frankfurt am Main.

Act

Brandes examined the influence of statins on the function of the inner layer of blood vessels ( endothelium ): they activate NADPH - oxidases , enzymes of the Nox family. He was able to prove that enzymes of this family produce reactive oxygen species - so-called oxygen radicals - which are not harmful under non-pathological conditions, but act as messenger substances . They are involved in the formation of new blood vessels ( angiogenesis ) and mediate the protective effect of erythropoietin .

Brandes' other work deals with the importance of signal transduction of fatty acid products for the development of cardiovascular diseases , with the function of small GTPases and GTPase-activating proteins in signal transduction of the vessels and, in turn, in the development of cardiovascular diseases as well as with the production and action of autacoids .
