Ralf Latz (born May 12, 1959 in Saarbrücken ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and former mayor of Saarbrücken.

biography

After graduating from high school in 1979, Latz did his community service in a nursing home run by the Saarbrücken workers' welfare organization. The experiences there gave him fundamental impulses in his social and political attitudes. In 1981 Latz began studying public administration , which he successfully completed in 1984 with a degree in public administration . In the same year he began his professional career in the social welfare office in the Saarbrücken district of Burbach . In 1989 he moved to what was then the Ministry of Social Affairs, where he mainly worked in the area of ​​“budget and finance”. From 2006 Latz worked as a government councilor in the Ministry of the Interior and Sport.

Latz is married and has one grown son.

Political activities

Ralf Latz is a member of the SPD. His political engagement took place in the SPD local association Saarbrücken- Malstatt , where he began as a JUSO member and also headed the local association there for several years. Since 1989 he was a member of the council of the state capital Saarbrücken and from 1999 deputy chairman of its SPD city council group. In 2003 he took over the chairmanship of the group. His main focus was in the areas of human resources and finance. In addition, he was responsible for the supervisory bodies of the VVS Group and Energie Saar Lor Lux GmbH (ESLL) as well as on the board of directors of Sparkasse Saarbrücken . In 2010, after coalition negotiations with the Greens and the Left , Ralf Latz was elected full-time mayor of the state capital Saarbrücken with the responsibility for "Finance and Law" by a majority of the city ​​council. In this position he was also the permanent representative of the mayor. Barbara Meyer-Gluche succeeded him in January 2020 .

Social engagement

After leaving the office of Mayor of Saarbrücken, Latz took over the honorary management of Lebenshilfe Saarbrücken in May 2020.
