Ralph Waldo Ince (born January 16, 1887 in Boston , Massachusetts , † April 10, 1937 in London , England ) was an American film director , screenwriter and actor .

life and career

Ralph Ince was born to English immigrants in Boston, near show business, as his father was talent agents and his mother and older brothers were actors. His older brothers John Ince and Thomas H. Ince later also worked in the film business as filmmakers and directors.

From 1906 Ince worked as a draftsman for Winsor McCay , the pioneer of animated films, and thus managed to enter the still young film business. As an actor he stood in front of the camera for the Vitagraph film studio from 1907 , where he played the US President Abraham Lincoln in a series of ten-minute silent films (so-called one-reeler ) . Ince later also directed, but still remained involved in acting. For example, in Little Caesar , a classic of the gangster film, he played a gang boss at the side of Edward G. Robinson . Ince did not spend the last years of his life in Hollywood, but in England, where he worked as a filmmaker in the British film industry. When he died, he had directed over 170 films and appeared as an actor in around 110 films.

Ralph Ince was married three times: from 1910 until the divorce in 1925 with the actress Lucille Lee Stewart (1889–1982), a sister of Anita Stewart ; from 1926 until his divorce in 1932 with Rosa Castro (1906–2007), daughter of Venezuelan President Cipriano Castro ; and most recently with Helen Tigges from 1932 until his death. With her, Ince had a child who was born just a few months before his death. He died in a car accident in London at the age of 50.
