Ramon Chao

Ramón Luís Chao Rego (born July 21, 1935 in Villalba , Lugo , † May 20, 2018 in Barcelona ) was a Spanish journalist and writer .

Chao studied music history in Madrid and Paris . In 1956 he and his wife, the Basque artist Felisa Ortega , fled from the Franco regime to France into exile, where their sons Manu Chao (* 1961) and Antoine Chao (* 1963) were born in Paris. In France he worked for Radio France Internationale , Le Monde and Le Monde diplomatique, among others . Chao was the founder of the Prix ​​Juan Rulfo , a prestigious award for Spanish-language short stories, and lived in Paris.
