Iosif "Józsi" Bükössy , actually József Bükössy , (born August 12, 1936 in Mediaş , † October 30, 2006 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian football player and coach and belonged to the Hungarian minority. He played 123 games in the highest Romanian football league, Divizia A , and is considered the discoverer of Gheorghe Hagi .
Career as a player
Bükössy began playing football in 1948 in the youth team of Sparta Mediaș . In 1954 he moved to local rivals flacara Medias , which in Divizia B played. A year and a half later, Bükössy moved to the capital to join league rivals Progresul Combinatul Poligrafic "Casa Scânteii" Bucharest , where he only stayed for half a year. For the 1956 season he was obliged by the military club CCA Bucharest , for which he made his debut on May 27, 1956 in the game against Progresul Oradea in Divizia A. The club became Romanian champions in the same year, but Bükössy was only used very sporadically. He was also able to contribute little to the runner-up at CCA and the cup victory in the following year, so that in 1958 he moved to Dinamo Bucharest . After another runner-up and a disappointing 1959/60 season Bükössy left Dinamo in the direction of the second division Dinamo Obor Bucharest . With this he reached the Romanian cup final in 1961. In 1962 Bükössy turned his back on Bucharest and settled on the Black Sea coast in Constanța . There he played until 1967 with the first division club Farul Constanța and then until the end of his active career in 1970 with Portul Constanța .
National team
Bükössy played four times in the Romanian U23 national team, but without making it to an international match in the Romanian national soccer team .
Career as a coach
Bükössy began training young players at Portul Constanța in 1971. After three years he returned to Farul in the youth sector and remained loyal to the club until his death. His greatest sporting success was winning the Romanian junior championship in the 1976/77 season with Farul. He went down in Romanian football history as the first coach and sponsor of players like Gheorghe Hagi and Ianis Zicu . Bükössy died on October 30, 2006 in the Bucharest "Fundeni" hospital, where he had not recovered from a liver operation on September 22, 2006.
