Ramón Fonseca Mora

Ramón Fonseca Mora (born July 14, 1952 in Panama City ) is a Panamanian novelist , lawyer and co-founder of the law firm Mossack Fonseca . Until the Panama Papers became known in March 2016, he was also an advisor to the Panamanian President and Vice-Chairman of the ruling Partido Panameñista .

Early years

Fonseca studied law and politics at the Universidad de Panamá  and the London School of Economics .

Career as a lawyer

In 1986 he founded the law firm Mossack Fonseca together with Jürgen Mossack . Mossack founded Jürgen Mossack Lawfirm in Panama City as early as 1977 .

Ramón Fonseca was the second vice-president of the Partido Panameñista , which is Panama's current president, Juan Carlos Varela . Ramón Fonseca was the president's closest confidante until the Panama Papers were announced.

In the 2019 film Money Laundering , Mora is portrayed by Antonio Banderas .

Panama Papers

On April 3, 2016, various international media, in cooperation with the International Consortium for Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), published a series of articles about Mossack Fonseca's clients and their financial constructs in tax havens . The articles were based on a data set from the group that was leaked to the Süddeutsche Zeitung by a whistleblower . Fonseca denied allegations that the firm was helping with money laundering and tax evasion in a television interview on April 3, 2016. He described the disclosure of internal documents as a " hack " and a "crime".

Career as an author

Fonseca is an award-winning novelist. His detective novel La danza de las mariposas appeared in German translation in 2000 as The Dance of the Butterflies ; It is set in a fictional Central American country in which the military control society with the help of an esoteric circle.
