Ramón Mateo

Ramón Mateo (born June 23, 1958 in San Juan de la Maguana ) is a chess master from the Dominican Republic . He is the first grand master of his country.

Mateo learned chess at the age of 13. Soon afterwards he achieved numerous successes on a national and international level. In 1981 FIDE awarded him the title of International Master . In 1988 Mateo retired from tournament chess, but started a successful comeback ten years later: He fulfilled in November 2002 at the Cerrado Nazir Atallah in Santo Domingo , in July 2004 at the international Open in Balaguer (Lleida) and in July 2005 at the 25th Villa de Benasque -Open three norms for the title of grandmaster awarded by FIDE once he reached the last required qualification, an Elo rating above 2500, which was the case in April 2008. In March 2008 he won the strong Toulouse Open . Mateo represented the Dominican Republic at ten Chess Olympiads between 1978 and 2008 .

Its Elo rating is 2392 (as of October 2014), its highest to date was 2506 in April 2008.
