The Rama VIII Bridge ( Thai : สะพาน พระราม 8 - Saphan Phra Ram Paet ) is a cable-stayed bridge in Bangkok , Thailand . It was officially opened on September 20, 2002 .

The bridge consists of a single 160 meter high pylon , which stands about a third of the bridge length from the north-western end of the bridge, as well as the four-lane carriageway, which is suspended from gold-plated steel cables, which are illuminated by spotlights at night. The pylon is crowned by a gilded sculpture of a stylized flame. Including the driveways, the bridge is 2.45 km long, the main bridge is 475 m long and the largest span is 300 m.

The bridge spans the Mae Nam Chao Phraya ( Chao Phraya River ). It bears the name of the eighth king of the currently reigning Chakri dynasty, Ananda Mahidol (Rama VIII) . His portrait is shown on the back of a 20 baht banknote including the bridge.
